"Receiving this award was a great honor! The quality of the artwork, camaraderie to fellow artists, and the access to such fine subject matter make this event both challenging and fun. Creating works that will help raise awareness for the need to protect open spaces and wildlands is a truly rewarding endeavor. I look forward to next year's event."

Heritage Art Exhibition

A unique event that showcases the beauty of the Natural Landmarks and the talents of local Plein-Air painters raises funding to benefit programs of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy and the Capistrano Valley Conservancy. Held in spring nearly every year, the “Heritage Art” Exhibition features two separate events – the first is a fascinating “Quick Draw” event, with painters racing to create masterpieces inspired by the beauty of the Natural Landmarks in under two hours. The paintings are then auctioned off with the proceeds going to support land stewardship activities. Many paintings are purchased before the paint even dries!

The second event, the “Heritage Art Gala and Sale,” is held at Joan Irvine Smith's Oaks Farms in San Juan Capistrano. Attendance averages 200 people, who enjoy dinner al fresco under majestic oaks and an opportunity to purchase breath-taking plein air paintings from professional artists illustrating and inspired by the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.

The Heritage Art Event series resulted from the leadership and vision of Mrs. Smith, a leading patron of the Plein-Air art style and the great-granddaughter of James Irvine, the original owner of the Irvine Ranch. Plein-Air is painting style describing works created outdoors in natural lighting. Both events were organized by the Capistrano Valley Conservancy and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy along with OC Parks and numerous volunteers.

The events showcase the Irvine family's legacy in defining Orange County as well as the forward-thinking preservation vision and stewardship passion of Donald Bren, founder of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy. The art itself pays homage to and celebrates the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. In 2008, the event raised more than $175,000 for land conservation and protection work of the partner organizations. "We sincerely thank the wonderful artists who depicted these Orange County wildlands so beautifully, as well as our patrons who attended and graciously purchased paintings for their collection. Through this event, we’ll continue our work to save California’s historical, cultural and natural treasures. If not for our concentrated efforts, these wildlands will otherwise disappear, never to be seen again, which we must prevent from happening."
